A Municipality is a local government administrative division composed of a defined territory and population. While there are many varieties of municipalities, most fall into one of two categories: (1) a single settlement, a city, town, or village, and (2) a land area similar to a township that may contain multiple settlements, or even just part of one, such as a city's borough.
The Barrackpore Municipality has been set up in 1916 under the then Bengal Municipal Act. Its population, as per the Census Report, 2011 is 1, 52,783 with an area of 10.61 sq. km. The number of House Hold is 34,322 having 4.5 persons per house hold. The entire municipal area has been delimitated into 24 wards. The Municipality is administered by an elected Board of Councilors headed by the chairman who is also aided and assisted by Chairman-in-council Comprising 4 members including the Vice-Chairman, apartment from the paid management. Over the years this Municipality of a historic town has grown into an institution for Urban Development within its area of operation. For its spectacular performance, it has been adjudged as the best municipality in the state. This civic body has been fully computerized since 1995 and has introduced Double Entry System of Accounts. It has always been endeavoring to generate more and more non-tax revenue for taking up development work at its own. It has introduced Citizen Charter committing time-limit for providing every municipal service to the citizens & the stake-holders.
Barrackpore Municipality is the Local administration body of Barrackpore a town vested with historic significance located around the vicinity of River Ganges around 20 km away from the heart of the City Kolkata in West Bengal, providing its inhabitants with a variety of services.
Barrackpore Municipality makes sure that people in their areas have at least the basic services they need. There are a large number of services that they provide, the most important of which are:
• Water supply
• Sewage collection and disposal
• Municipal health services
• Street Lighting
• Municipal roads and drainage facilities.
• Street lighting
• Solid waste management
• Primary Education
• Slum development.
These services have a direct and immediate effect on the quality of the lives of the people residing within the Jurisdiction of Barrackpore Municipality.
Local government [municipality] is the sphere of government closest to the people they are elected by citizens to represent them and are responsible to ensure that services are delivered to the community. One way in which Barrackpore Municipality renders such services is through the use of their own resources - finance, equipment and employees. A municipality may also outsource the provision of a service. In other words, it may choose to hire Third Party to deliver the service but it remains the responsibility of the municipality to choose the service provider and to monitor the quality of the service delivery.
